The Israel-Palestine Conflict: A Timeline

A History of Violence

The Israel-Palestine conflict is one of the most complex and long-standing conflicts in the world. The roots of the conflict can be traced back to the late 19th century, when the Zionist movement began to advocate for the establishment of a Jewish state in Palestine. This led to tensions with the Arab population of Palestine, who feared that the establishment of a Jewish state would lead to their displacement. In 1948, the United Nations voted to partition Palestine into two states, one Jewish and one Arab. However, the Arab states rejected the partition plan, and war broke out between the newly created state of Israel and its Arab neighbors. Israel emerged victorious from the war, and the Arab population of Palestine was largely displaced. In the decades that followed, the conflict between Israel and Palestine continued, with periodic outbreaks of violence. In 1967, Israel occupied the West Bank and Gaza Strip in a war with Egypt, Jordan, and Syria. The occupation has continued ever since, and the Palestinians have been living under Israeli military rule.

Recent Developments

In recent years, the conflict between Israel and Palestine has intensified. In 2014, Hamas, the militant group that controls Gaza, launched a rocket attack on Israel. Israel responded with a military offensive that resulted in the deaths of over 2,000 Palestinians. In 2017, US President Donald Trump recognized Jerusalem as the capital of Israel and announced plans to move the US embassy there. This move was condemned by the Palestinians and other Arab states. In 2018, the US cut off funding to the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees (UNRWA). UNRWA provides food, shelter, and education to Palestinian refugees. The US said the funding was cut because UNRWA was "irredeemably flawed" and that it "perpetuates a status quo".

The Future of the Conflict

The future of the Israel-Palestine conflict is uncertain. There is no easy solution to the conflict, and both sides are deeply entrenched in their positions. However, there is a growing international consensus that the only way to achieve a lasting peace is through a two-state solution, with Israel and Palestine living side-by-side in peace and security.
